RAFTING ON THE TARA AND DRINA RIVERS AND A VISIT OF SARAJEVO

On a timber raft or by rubber dinghy or kayak, through the deepest canyon in Europe, on the Tara and Drina rivers over a distance of 130 kilometres (Bosnia, Montenegro and Dubrovnik in Croatia).

In eight days, we will discover one of the most beautiful and interesting regions of the Balkans, rich in history and still scarred by the wars of the 1990s. We’ll discover a UNESCO World Heritage site and the Bosnian capital Sarajevo, scene in 1914 of one of the events that led to the outbreak of the First World War and host of the 1984 Winter Olympics. But the highlight of the trip will be a four-day descent in a traditional timber raft down the Tara and Drina rivers.

1st DAY: Sarajevo

Air travellers :

Departure from your city to Sarajevo on your own.
Pick-up at the airport and transfer to Hotel “Art”, part of Hotel Europa. Centrally located. Dinner in the quiet restaurant “Pod Lipom” (“Under the Lime Tree”). Or going on your own to the place of accommodation.

2nd DAY: Đurđevića Tara

Air travellers: After breakfast, you will travel with the organiser to the hotel “Enigma” in Durmitor National Park (Montenegro). Dinner and overnight stay. Breakfast.

Individual travellers – If you’re already in Montenegro: Arrival at the overnight accommodation, a farm guesthouse. Rooms with two or more beds. Accessible via the Žabljak-Pljevlja road. After crossing the Tara bridge, turn left after approx. 1 km.

The turn-off and meeting point is easily recognisable; enter the coordinates in Google Earth: N43° 09.986′ E19° 16.810′. Near this farm (approx. 2 km) is our starting point, 2 km from the big Tara bridge upstream (so-called “Splavište” or Rafting Station). On request, reliable drivers will drive your car to the end point of the rafting trip i.e. to Camping Kalista.

If you’re already in Bosnia or passing through Bosnia (Sarajevo), you can park your car at the Kalista arrival point. Our rafting trip ends here, so you can continue further directly with your own car. Vehicles can be parked safely and free of charge during our rafting/boat trip, both at Camp Kalista and at the farm (see above). The organiser will pick you up and from there you can go on by bus with the other passengers.

3rd DAY: Radovan Luka

38 km, a 3 to 4 hour- trip (including breaks)

The 5-day expedition begins today with kayaks, rubber dinghies and/or a traditional timber raft down the Montenegrin/Bosnian Tara. With its steep cliffs up to 1, 200 m high, it is the largest of its kind in Europe. Hardly populated and impassable, it is almost completely preserved in its original state. Its water has drinking water quality and is crystal clear. Experienced Bosnian raftsmen guide us safely through the numerous rapids to our campsite on the Radovan meadow. Throughout the days on the river, it is possible at any time to switch from kayak to raft or dinghy.

4th DAY : Hiking to the village of Tepca

After breakfast, rest day or opportunity for an easy hike (total duration: approx. 3.5 hours) to a mountain village, where we are spoilt with Montenegrin specialities. Return on foot and dinner around a campfire.

We sleep in large tents (length 4.6 m, width 3 m, height 2 m) with three spaces inside. In the tents there are bed mattresses with pillows and blankets, all with fresh bed linen. One tent can sleep 1-3 people, just as you wish. The tents are already pitched and do not need to be taken down.

5th DAY: Encijan

41 km, a 3–4-hour trip (including breaks):

Breakfast, then continue through the Tara Canyon past beautiful waterfalls to Camping Encijan situated directly on the river bank. Overnight stay in small wooden huts with beds. Showers with hot water and electricity available.

6th DAY : Kalista

25 km, 3 hours (including breaks) : An adventurous downhill stretch awaits us during our journey today. We drive to Šćepan Polje, where the Tara joins the Piva to form the Drina after almost 100 km. Our destination is Camping Kalista. See Google Earth N43° 23.872′ E18° 46.798′. Overnight stay in bungalows with beds. Showers with hot water and electricity available.

7th DAY : Foča and Sarajevo

Individual travellers :

After breakfast, the vehicle drivers, or possibly everyone, are taken to the launch site. Kayaks can be collected from the camp on the return journey.

Air travellers (approx. 25 km, 3 hours (including breaks) :

Continuation down the Drina to Foča.

Sarajevo

The bus/coach is waiting there to take the travellers back to the Sarajevo hotel through an interesting mountain landscape. Before dinner , everyone shall have time enough to explore this fascinating city on its own.

8th DAY: Sarajevo

Breakfast – and possible lunch (depending on flight departure time). Transfer to the airport

Price for individual travellers:

Rafting tour including full board with unlimited alcooholic and non-alcooholic beverages during the rafting days as well as all transfers. All-inclusive.

Total: €545 per person

Deposit: €120 per person

After confirmation a deposit is required. The remaining balance is paid on site. An invoice can be delivered on request. You will receive your account details after confirmation.

Price for air travellers:

Rafting tour, including overnight stays, full board, unlimited alcohoolic and non-alcooholic beverages in Sarajevo and during the rafting days, as well as all transfers. All inclusive.

Total: €749 per person

Deposit: €120 per person

Without flight costs.

After confirmation a deposit is required. The remaining balance is paid on site. An invoice can be delivered on request. You will receive your account details after confirmation

If, for whatever reason, you are unable to travel and make that trip, your deposit will not be lost as you can take part on another date (by mutual agreement) in this or next season (i.e. next year).

POSSIBLE VARIANTS

For this rafting tour on the Tara and Drina rivers, we offer two eventual variations:

A – If you wish, I can pick you up on the afternoon of day 5 in Sarajevo to take you to the Encijan campsite to join the group for dinner (or lunch if you arrive earlier). Until the 7th day back in Sarajevo, according to the above programme, this will be an itinerary of only 3 days and 2 nights. In this case, the route will be only 59 km for the price of 199 euros all-inclusive per person from Sarajevo to Sarajevo.

B – It is also possible for me to pick you up on the afternoon of the 5th day in Sarajevo to take you to the Encijan campsite to join the group for dinner (or for lunch if you arrive earlier). Until the 6th day of return to Sarajevo according to the above programme, this will then be an itinerary of only 2 days and 1 night and the route will be only 49 km, for the price of 110 euros all inclusive per person from Sarajevo to Sarajevo.

REMARKS

INCLUDED

Equipment for rafting: you do not need to bring a life jacket/vest as it is provided by the organiser.
Each participant may bring along up to 15 kg of personal belongings.
The Tara water is drinkable, the temperature is around 12-15°C, depending on the time of year.
Vegetarian options available.

NOT INCLUDED

The Tara is a paradise for anglers. If you wish, this can be included in the programme. In this case, you must bring your own fishing equipment.
There are no mosquitoes in the canyon.
Equipment: you do not need to bring any special equipment for the raft trip. Sports shoes are suitable for the (easy) hike. Light footwear (e.g. sandals) for the raft as your feet are sometimes in the water during the trip, but they still rest on the tree trunks. It is also a good idea to take a swimming suit with you in case you want to refresh in the river.

OTHER POSSIBILITIES

We also organise rafting (inflatable boats) tours on request.
Durmitor National Park: before or after the raft trip, individual travellers have many opportunities to explore the remote parts of the national park or the surrounding mountains on their own. This programme can be modified in many ways. For example, a few hiking days can be included during your stay in Žabljak, a town lying in the centre of Durmitor National Park, surrounded by a magnificent mountain world. The Sutjeska Nature Park is also ideal for hiking. Or you can stay a few more days by the sea and enjoy a swim.
If you only wish to take part in the raft trip (days 3-6), this is also possible. You will then be joining an already constituted group and follow its programme.
